Clean Energy:

We believe that the development of Clean Energy generators in our area, to efficiently utilize our resources and clean our air will be our positive legacy to our grandchildren.  At MBE we are concentrating on two methods of producing this energy:

BioMass:  The term biomass refers to plant materials and animal wastes used for energy, especially tree and grass crops, and forestry, and agricultural residues. It is the oldest source of renewable energy known to humans, used since our ancestors learned the secret of fire.

Biomass is a renewable energy source because the energy it contains comes from the sun. Through the process of photosynthesis, chlorophyll in plants captures the sun's energy by converting carbon dioxide from the air and water from the ground into carbohydrates, complex compounds composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. When these carbohydrates are burned, they turn back into carbon dioxide and water and release the sun's energy they contain. In this way, biomass functions as a sort of natural battery for storing solar energy. As long as biomass is produced sustainably -- with only as much used as is grown -- the battery will last indefinitely.

MBE is concentrating on wood recycling - the grinding of waste wood to produce a wood fuel, and Corn stover - the grinding of corn stalk residue to produce fuel.

Wind:  The use of wind as a source of power has been slowly growing in the Iowa and Illinois in the form of large utility size turbines.  We believe that a second part of this wind energy growth should be in distributed wind energy.  These are small to mid-size turbines (20-50 kw) that supply the electricity for the farm or business upon which they are located.  This allows for a return to the owner at full retail cost for electricity -- about 4 times what the large turbine owners are paid by the utility.  MBE has utilized an Illinois State Grant to build a turbine on our farm.
