Renewable Energy and Waste Control

The need for alternative clean energy sources and new methods to more effectively utilize our waste has never been clearer.  As a grain farmer in the Midwest , Holesinger Farms realizes our responsibility to be good stewards of the land with which we have been blessed.  We also believe we are in a unique position to make a difference in these areas.  MBE was established to meet these needs.

Clean Energy:

BioMass:  A biomass fuel in the form of wood chips and corn stalks can supply steam and electricity significantly cheaper than natural gas and cleaner than coal.  This fuel also reduces the net Carbon Dioxide released to the atmosphere, since it is taken up again in the growth of the next crop to be harvested.  We are working to construct and fuel a biomass plant in our area.

Wind:  The use of distributed power through mid-size wind generators reduces our dependence on large centralized generators.  At the same time it directly reduces the owner’s electric bills.  We have constructed a 20 kw wind turbine on our farm with support of the State of Illinois and Commonwealth Edison.

Methane to Natural Gas: We assist in developing Methane to Natural Gas facilities.  This may result in the sale of Natural Gas to the pipeline or electricity generation.

Waste Control:

Wood Recycling:  A major input into our waste facilities is from wood refuge – tree trimmings, wood manufacturing waste.  MBE has started a wood recycling facility in Davis Junction, Illinois to produce useable products from wood waste.  These include wood mulch, wood fuel and wood shavings for compost.

Manure Management:  The effective removal of animal waste from farm operations continues to be a challenge. MBE has started a compost operation at its farms to change the hog manure into fertilizer grade compost.  This operation utilizes wood shavings with the hog manure.  The resulting product allows us to continue to get the fertilizer benefit of the manure, while reduces odor and the time constraints of removing the manure between crop seasons.
